Our unconscious mind is filled with fear when it comes to the concept of justice. We associate it with punishment and suffering. We associate it with severity and rejection. But the sword is not there to cut off your head. It is the sword of discernment, symbolizing the mastery of the element of air. The perfection of Air means a sharp and discerning mind able to withstand the pressures of peers and conformity as well as the temptations of lies, ego desires, and manipulation.
The scales of balance also aren’t there to weigh your good deeds against your bad. After all, there is no good action that does not produce bad in its wake, and no bad that has not produced some good. This is true historically as well as in your personal life. The scales of balance, rather, are there to weigh your heart. In the Egyptian story of Ma’at, when a person dies, their heart is weighed against a feather. If it is lighter than a feather, they may pass into the great beyond. If not, they must return to earth and continue their spiritual work of purification and the attainment of wisdom.
The red color of the robe that is crowned with gold indicates power (red) directed by wisdom (gold). The white shoe peaking out of the robe tells us that the energy of the Justice card is grounded in purity. That it is about the purification of the mind and heart, not about punishment and vengeance. The blue and red gems indicate a balance of human passion and calm spiritual presence - a balance of water and fire.
Association with Libra: The Justice tarot card is associated with the sign of Libra and represents our fundamental instinct to find balance and live equitably. It reminds us of the stillpoint within ourselves where we find peace even though the swinging pendulum of life itself never comes to a stop.
